Indonesia Entering The Dark Ages?

Millions of children in Indonesian elementary schools may no longer have separate science classes starting in June, the beginning of their next school year, if the government approves a curriculum overhaul that would merge science and social studies with other classes so more time can be devoted to religious education.

Officials who back the changes say that more religious instruction is needed because a lack of moral development has led to an increase in violence and vandalism among youths, and that could fuel social unrest and corruption in the future.

Indonesia is a Muslim-majority country with a secular government that recognizes the rights of six different faiths, including Catholicism, Protestantism, Buddhism, Hinduism and Confucianism.

Religion is taught to students according to their own faiths, meaning that Muslim students are instructed in Islam, while Christian students study Christianity in separate classes. Reflecting the country’s demographics, most religious instruction is Islamic.

The Ministry of Religious Affairs, which advises the Education Ministry, is proposing that religious education be increased to four hours a week from two. It will remain a compulsory subject, along with mathematics, arts and crafts, physical education, Indonesian language and civics.

A growing concern we read about today is the rise of bed bug incidents and everyone is freaking out. I was mulling over these bugs and how they must have evolved. They only come out at night and feed on human blood. Their interaction with humans evolved in such a way that they are the great at staying alive and continuing to breed. Humans are quite clever. Any bugs that would have come out in the day light would be immediately killed, so those who tendency would be to hid during that time would successfully breed. Also, the size of them would remain small because humans could see the bigger ones and kill them. How intellectually satisfying evolution and natural selection is! It just makes sense. This principal of natural selection can be applied to all living things. Humans even became more clever and developed pesticides, such as DDT and which could find these little buggers 24 by 7. However, some evolved resistance to this pesticide. Humans found out that DDT had some serious bad affects so they stopped using it. Now the bed bugs are coming back because the old methods and finding them and physically killing them keeps the survivors small and only coming out at night. I would expect some pesticide company is trying to come up with a new version of DDT because it will be lucrative, but it will need to attack these bugs who have evolved resistance to DDT in a new way.  This is the whole basis for antibiotics. Humans have to continue to develop new stains because bacteria continues to adapt and evolve with what is in their environment. How predictable evolution is and how brilliant Darwin was. He truly was a great man and gave us a wonderful tool that truly helped mankind.

Then on the other side you have the evolution-haters, the fundies of the monotheistic religions. What has been their plan on saving humans from disease and pests? Pray, brother, pray. When science was not around or at best voodoo that is all humans could do. Now is the time to realize that this is of no value for helping mankind. Christians mock fundie Muslims who put their women in burkas and yet they stop science cold. Science has proven its value. Fundamental monotheistic religions have had their time and come up very short. When will they open their eyes?

Look how the Church loves to keep it's lies. This shroud was carbon dated meticulously by 3 independent laboratories. They all placed it in around the 14th century in which it suddenly appeared. But the Pope like a snake-oil seller continues to prey on the credulous.

TURIN (Italy) - POPE Benedict XVI all but gave an outright endorsement of the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin, calling the cloth that some believe is Christ's burial shroud an icon 'written with the blood' of a crucified man.

During a visit Sunday to the Shroud in the northern Italian city of Turin, Benedict didn't raise the scientific questions that surround the linen and whether it might be a medieval forgery. Instead, he delivered a powerful meditation on the faith that holds that the Shroud is indeed Christ's burial cloth.

'This is a burial cloth that wrapped the remains of a crucified man in full correspondence with what the Gospels tell us of Jesus,' Benedict said. He said the relic - one of the most important in Christianity - should be seen as a photographic document of the 'darkest mystery of faith' - that of Christ's crucifixion and resurrection.

The 4.3-meter-long, 1 meter-wide cloth has gone on public display for the first time since the 2000 Millennium celebrations and a subsequent 2002 restoration. Kept in a bulletproof, climate-controlled case in Turin's cathedral, it has drawn nearly 2 million reservations from pilgrims and tourists eager to spend three to five minutes viewing it. The Shroud bears the figure of a crucified man, complete with blood seeping from his hands and feet, and believers say Christ's image was recorded on the linen's fibers at the time of his resurrection.

Benedict focused in his meditation on the message that the blood stains conveyed, saying the Shroud was 'an icon written in blood; the blood of a man who was whipped, crowned with thorns, crucified and injured on his right side. 'The image on the Shroud is that of a dead man, but the blood speaks of his life. Each trace of blood speaks of love and life,' Benedict said.

The Vatican to date had tiptoed around the issue of just what the Shroud of Turin is, calling it a powerful symbol of Christ's suffering while making no claim to its authenticity. Benedict's meditation - delivered after he prayed as if in a trance before the shroud - appeared to imply that in the end it doesn't matter what science says about its authenticity. -- AP

Conservative evangelical Bruce Waltke ousted for accepting evolution

Fundamentalist like to say that science professionals are heavily pressured to support and believe evolution. It is so f*cking annoying how they accuse others of what they do.

"If the data is overwhelmingly in favor of evolution, to deny that reality will make us a cult -- some odd group that is not really interacting with the world," says Bruce Waltke.

There is death in heaven

Heaven is where Christians want to go. Look up. Everything is the same. The heavens die as well. How silly it is to think that Adam and Eve eating a piece of fruit here on earth could cause stars to explode and die billions of light years away.

But whereas it was desired at that time to deal leniently with you, it was decreed at the Holy Congregation held before His Holiness on the twenty-fifth of February, 1616, that his Eminence the Lord Cardinal Bellarmine should order you to abandon altogether the said false doctrine and, in the event of your refusal, that an injunction should be imposed upon you by the Commissary of the Holy Office to give up the said doctrine and not to teach it to others, not to defend it, nor even to discuss it; and your failing your acquiescence in this injunction, that you should be imprisoned. In execution of this decree, on the following day at the palace of and in the presence of the Cardinal Bellarmine, after being gently admonished by the said Lord Cardinal, the command was enjoined upon you by the Father Commissary of the Holy Office of that time, before a notary and witnesses, that you were altogether to abandon the said false opinion and not in the future to hold or defend or teach it in any way whatsoever, neither verbally nor in writing; and upon your promising to obey, you were dismissed.

And whereas a book appeared here recently, printed last year at Florence, the title of which shows that you were the author, this title being: “Dialogue of Galileo Galilei on the Great World System:”; and whereas the Holy Congregation was afterward informed that through the publication of said book the false opinion of the motion of the Earth and the stability of the Sun was daily gaining round, the said book was taken into careful consideration, and in it there was discovered a patent violation of the aforesaid injunction that had been imposed upon you, for in this book you have defended the said opinion previously condemned and to your face declared to be so, although in the said book you strive by various devices to produce the impression that you leave it undecided, and in express terms as probably: which, however, is a most grievous error, as an opinion can in no wise be probable which has been declared and defined to be contrary to divine Scripture.

Therefore by our order you were cited before this Holy office, where, being examined upon our oath, you acknowledged the book to be written and published by you. You confessed that you began to write the said book about ten or twelve years ago, after the command had been imposed upon you as above; that you requested license ot print it without, however, intimating to those who granted you this license that you had been commanded not to hold, defend, or teach the doctrine in question in any way whatever.

You likewise confessed that the writing of the said book is in many places drawn up in such a form that the reader might fancy that the arguments brought forward on the false side are calculated by their cogency to compel conviction rather than to be easy of refutation, excusing yourself for having fallen into an error, as you alleged, so foreign to your intention, by the fact that you had written in dialogue and by the natural complacency that every man feels in regard to his own subtleties and in showing himself more clever than the generality of men in devising, even on behalf of false propositions, ingenious and plausible arguments.

And a suitable term having been assigned to you to prepare your defense, you produced a certificate in the handwriting of his Eminence the Lord Cardinal Bellarmine, procured by you, as you asserted, in order to defend yourself against the calumnies of your enemies, who charged that you had abjured and had been punished by the Holy Office, in which certificate it is declared that you had not abjured and had not been punished but only that the declaration made by His Holiness and published by the Holy Congregation of the Index has been announced to you, wherein it is declared that the doctrine of the motion of the Earth and the stability of the Sun is contrary to the Holy Scriptures and therefore cannot be defended or held. And, as in this certificate there is no mention of the two articles of the injunction, namely, the order not “to teach” and “in any way,” you represented that we ought to believe that in the course of fourteen or sixteen years you had lost all memory of them and that this was why you said nothing of the injunction when you requested permission to print your book. And all this you urged not by way of excuse for your error but that it might be set down to a vainglorious ambitions rather than to malice. But his certificate produced by you in your defense has only aggravated your delinquency, since, although it is there stated that said opinion is contrary to Holy Scripture, you have nevertheless dared to discuss and defend it and to argue its probability; nor does the license artfully and cunningly extorted by you avail you anything, since you did not notify the command imposed upon you.

And whereas it appeared to us that you had not stated the full truth with regard to your intention, we thought it necessary to subject you to a rigorous examination at which (without prejudice, however, to the matters confessed by you and set forth as above with regard to your said intention) you answered like a good Catholic. Therefore, having seen and maturely considered the merits of this your cause, together with your confessions and excuses above-mentioned, and all that ought justly to be seen and considered, we have arrived at the underwritten final sentence against you:

Invoking, therefore, the most holy name of our Lord Jesus Christ and of His most glorious Mother, ever Virgin Mary, but this our final sentence, which sitting in judgment, with the counsel and advice of the Reverend Masters of sacred theology and Doctors of both Laws, our assessors, we deliver in these writings, in the cause and causes at present before us between the Magnificent Carlo Sinceri, Doctor of both Laws, Proctor Fiscal of this Holy Office, of the one part, and your Galileo Galilei, the defendant, here present, examined, tried, and confessed as shown above, of the other part—

We say, pronounce, sentence, and declare that you, the said Galileo, by reason of the matters adduced in trial, and by you confessed as above, have rendered yourself in the judgment of this Holy Office vehemently suspected of heresy, namely, of having believed and held the doctrine—which is false and contrary to the sacred and divine Scriptures—that the Sun is the center of the world and does not move from east to west and that the Earth moves and is not the center of the world; and that an opinion may be held and defended as probably after it has been declared and defined to be contrary to the Holy Scripture; and that consequently you have incurred all the censures and penalties imposed and promulgated in the sacred canons and other constitutions, general and particular, against such delinquents. From which we are content that you be absolved, provided that, first, with a sincere heart and unfeigned faith, you abjure, curse, and detest before use the aforesaid errors and heresies and every other error and heresy contrary to the Catholic and Apostolic Roman Church in the form to be prescribed by us for you.

And in order that this your grave and pernicious error and transgression may not remain altogether unpunished and that you may be more cautious in the future and an example to others that they may abstain from similar delinquencies, we ordain that the book of the “Dialogues of Galileo Galilei” be prohibited by public edict.

We condemn you to the formal prison of this Holy office during our pleasure, and by way of salutary penance we enjoin that for three years to come you repeat once a week at the seven penitential Psalms. Reserving to ourselves liberty to moderate, commute or take off, in whole or in part, the aforesaid penalties and penance.

And so we say, pronounce, sentence, declare, ordain, and reserve in this an din any other better way and form which we can and may rightfully employ.

Is God sitting on his thumb, watching

Nature has always perplexed me. It didn't make a lot of sense with my religious understanding of a God who loved us more than we could possibly know. I had to believe He loved me in spite of what I could see in nature. When I watched nature documentaries about predator and prey I found it terribly disturbing. I would challenge myself to watch them because it IS what happens countless times daily. The terrible suffering of a prey just seems more than I could bear and yet there was a God in heaven who watched all this with apparent disinterest. Surely He had the power to stop it. If a human parent did this to his child we would call it neglectful abuse.

I am reading Richard Dawkin's wonderful book on evolution called "The Greatest Show on Earth". In the light of evolution prey and predator simply makes sense. In Chapter 12 he demonstrates that evolution is like an arms race.

One thing about arms races that might worry enthusiast for intelligent design is the heavy dose of futility that loads them down. If we are going to postulate a designer of the cheetah, he has evidently put every ounce of his designing expertise into the task of perfecting a superlative killer. One look at the magnificent running machine leaves us in no doubt. The cheetah, if we are going to talk design at all, is superbly designed for killing gazelles. But the very same designer has equally evidently strained every nerve to design a gazelle that is superbly equipped to escape from those very same cheetahs. For heaven's sake whose side is the designer on? When you look at the cheetah's taut muscles and flexing backbone, you must conclude that the designer wants the cheetah to win the race. But when you look at the sprinting, jinking, dogging gazelle, you reach exactly the opposite conclusion. Does the designer's left hand not know what his right hand is doing? Is he a sadist, who enjoys the spectator sport and is forever upping the ante on both sides to increase the thrill of the chase?

But if you remove an intelligent designer and look at it as natural selection it simply makes sense. The cheetah needs to be fast to kill the gazelle to survive and to feed its young. Those that are successful are able to pass on their genes. A slow cheetah will not catch prey and starve to death and so will it's young so that those genes will fall from the gene pool of cheetahs. The gazelle that is slow will be caught and eaten. It too will not send on its' genes to future generations. The gazelles that are fast and have endurance to eventually out run the short burst of the cheetah will live to breed and pass on its' genes.

I still am sad to see this, but completely understand this is how natural selection works. And better I don't wonder why a personal being would sit up in heaven with indifference.

Evolution is a fact. For those who don't agree they don't understand it.

Offerings from Science and Religion 1800's

The 1800's provided an explosion in new ideas. I am reading Jan Sapp's book Genesis - The Evolution of Biology. It is a well-written book giving me lots of background on how our current understanding of biology was developed. I definitely recommend it if you can afford it's steep price ($50).

During this century many people from many countries contributed to science. Brilliant and dedicated minds contributed hard scientific evidence for ALL to see, to comment on, to test for themselves and even to build on. It is very impressive to see a combined human effort to discover realities about life. Their discoveries gave rise to knowing how to fight diseases allowing us to live longer and more healthfully.

Many sciences arose during this century.

As Sapp notes "The days were over in which an individual could pretend to be an expert on all aspects of the life sciences"

As I reading this section my mind drifted to what was going on in the religious world, particularly in the northern eastern United States, a lot of it in the so-called burned over district. These religions arose:

• Mormons - 1830
• Seventh-day Adventist - 1844
• Spiritualism (mediums) - 1848
• Christian Science - 1875
• Jehovah Witness - 1881
• Pentecostalism - versions from 1830 to 1901

These were not noble efforts to serve mankind, but instead the local interest of the prophets or ministers. They had secret knowledge which required you to believe before you would understand. Nothing could be tested or validated. Many Christians today believe these are cults. They would even call each other cults or under the control of Satan.

How advanced science could be if great minds were not burdened down by wacky religions trying to stop their progress?

The national academies of science of Cuba, Iran, Israel, and Tajikistan have all signed a statement on the teaching of evolution while the Texas State Board of Education has made it clear that it has serious doubts about the subject.

Jesus heals a blind man

(Jesus and his disciples) came to Bethsaida, and some people brought a blind man and begged Jesus to touch him. He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. When he had spit on the man’s eyes and put his hands on him, Jesus asked, “Do you see anything?”

He looked up and said, “I see people; they look like trees walking around.”

Once more Jesus put his hands on the man’s eyes. Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly.

Jesus, being the son of God, why couldn't He just heal blindness? That would be more loving and godly. Not much of a scientist. FAIL.

Maybe His disciples today could heal blindness. Right, their book tells them nothing about how to cure diseases. FAIL.

Christianity is Dead

Christianity has not shown a sign of life in two millennium.

Christianity cryogenically locked itself in 2000 years ago. It fossilized itself. There are no new prophets, no new teachers, no one enlightening us except with the same old tired statements made 2000 plus years ago. They have the one book with no new information or what they like to call revelation. Have you met someone who only lives in the past? It is quite sad.

Science on the other is quite vital and creating countless benefits to mankind. It is curing diseases and making incredible discoveries. Christianity has nothing to add or worse puts a drag on the process.

If you got cancer would you rather go exclusively to an oncologist or exclusively to Pat Robinson to say a little prayer for you? What would you venture the survival rate is between the two? Don't see any Christians hanging up their shingle to have diseases cured. We would consider him to be a voodoo doctor.

Moses miracle of the burning bush only witnessed by him is a good story. We can only see it by a cartoon drawing. In fact most of the imagines in my head of the Bible and its stories, including Jesus, are just cartoon imagines. Seems about right.

I am far more impressed by what the Hubble telescope can show all of us.

Christianity had a good run. Too bad so few realize that it usefulness is behind us and those who keep us there put a major drag on mankind's advancement. Remember how a fundamental President held down stem cell research. Glad that is over.

Project Steve - article from NCSE

National Center for Science Education's "Project Steve" is a tongue-in-cheek parody of a long-standing creationist tradition of amassing lists of "scientists who doubt evolution" or "scientists who dissent from Darwinism."

Creationists draw up these lists to try to convince the public that evolution is somehow being rejected by scientists, that it is a "theory in crisis." Not everyone realizes that this claim is unfounded. NCSE has been asked numerous times to compile a list of thousands of scientists affirming the validity of the theory of evolution. Although we easily could have done so, we have resisted. We did not wish to mislead the public into thinking that scientific issues are decided by who has the longer list of scientists!

Project Steve pokes fun at this practice and, because "Steves" are only about 1% of scientists, it also makes the point that tens of thousands of scientists support evolution. And it honors the late Stephen Jay Gould, evolutionary biologist, NCSE supporter, and friend.

We'd like to think that after Project Steve, we'll have seen the last of bogus "scientists doubting evolution" lists, but it's probably too much to ask. We hope that when such lists are proposed, reporters and other citizens will ask, "How many Steves are on your list!?"

Evolution is a vital, well-supported, unifying principle of the biological sciences, and the scientific evidence is overwhelmingly in favor of the idea that all living things share a common ancestry. When God is ready to own up I will believe

How is it that the Omnipotent (all powerful), Omniscient (all knowing), Omnipresent (frickin' everywhere) will not accept his responsibility for what he has done?

The story goes he created the world and it was good

Genesis 1:31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.

But apparently he created humans with an insatiable desire for knowledge. He throws two trees in Garden Central.

Genesis 2:9 In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

So then God allows the craftiest animal into Garden Central to tempt Eve.

Genesis 3:1-7

Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’” “You will not surely die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.

Now Eve, not God, is responsible for all this mess. Isn't like a Man (God) to blame a woman? Even Adam chimes in a bit later to drive the point home says "The woman you gave me gave me the fruit". The first quality assurance failure for God's science project.

Sex is implicated immediately as a bad thing. When they ate the fruit the first problem is they saw they were naked. LOL. Hate women, hate the natural sex drive. Quite revealing and we are only in the first three chapters of the Bible. That plays out endlessly through the rest of the book.

OK. God obvious set all this up. He gave man the desire for knowledge and yet NOT the ability to understand what that meant. Another lesson we learn here is no education is allowed without God's approval. What a prick.

The myth continues

Genesis 3:21-24

The LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them. And the LORD God said, “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.” So the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken. After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.

Now what kind of happy horse-crap is this? What was the point of this tree of life? Did they need that prior to SINNING? Don't think so. Just a simple non-sequitur. Perhaps a taunting carrot. Nah-nah-nah-nah-nah. You can't have it.

So, the rest of Bible is trying to convince us God is good while he sends his chosen (how lucky were they) to go slaughter and enslave people and treat women as property. Yet he is free of evil? Even James in the New Testament had to warn people about believing the OBVIOUS.

James 1:13-15

When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.

It says God is not responsible for evil. Then did God create everything or not? Are humans equal with God in that God only created part of the universe and man created the rest?

Are Satan and man God's blind spot?

The Apostle John had to weigh in on the topic as well

1 John 1:5

This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.

He isn't hiding in darkness. Do you see him? I don't. He makes it pretty hard to find him. Oh right, to understand him I need to set my brain aside (Didn't he create it?).

Isaiah in the Old Testament may have been willing to concede the obvious.

Isaiah 45:7

I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things.

Of course that is the King James Version. Modern versions and Christians afraid to go there changed the translation. (Isn't this like abused children defending their parents? Isn't this like the Stockholm Syndrome? You don't see what you are seeing)

I form the light and create darkness, I bring prosperity and create disaster;I, the LORD, do all these things.

Therefore God creates disasters. Why? Because you are stupid sinners and need to be punished.

Why can't God take responsibility for his creation? It is a very odd line of logic. Here is yet another place YOU MUST SUSPEND YOUR DISBELIEF.

Oh hold on, right, he is not real. I am angry at nothing. He is just an imaginary friend. In kids it is adorable. In adults it is deplorable.

Evolution is true. The issue of a perfect God creating an imperfect world is not there. Nothing to get mad at for being so irresponsible. How simple. I was only mad at the imaginary.
