If one be found slain in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it, lying in the field, and it be not known who hath slain him: 2Then thy elders and thy judges shall come forth, and they shall measure unto the cities which are round about him that is slain: 3And it shall be, that the city which is next unto the slain man, even the elders of that city shall take an heifer, which hath not been wrought with, and which hath not drawn in the yoke; 4And the elders of that city shall bring down the heifer unto a rough valley, which is neither eared nor sown, and shall strike off the heifer's neck there in the valley: 5And the priests the sons of Levi shall come near; for them the LORD thy God hath chosen to minister unto him, and to bless in the name of the LORD; and by their word shall every controversy and every stroke be tried: 6And all the elders of that city, that are next unto the slain man, shall wash their hands over the heifer that is beheaded in the valley: 7And they shall answer and say, Our hands have not shed this blood, neither have our eyes seen it. 8Be merciful, O LORD, unto thy people Israel, whom thou hast redeemed, and lay not innocent blood unto thy people of Israel's charge. And the blood shall be forgiven them. 9So shalt thou put away the guilt of innocent blood from among you, when thou shalt do that which is right in the sight of the LORD.

The all-knowing God wasn't able to give Israel advanced knowledge about finger prints, blood samples, DNA and many of the great scientific advances in the modern age discovered by man. Instead the closest town needed to slaughter a heifer and say a few words over the spilt innocent blood even though they said they were innocent already. Why would God need to forgive innocents? It's almost like primitive men with their lack of science just made it up and there was no God really there. And how similar this line of thinking was going on with pagan religions which preceded Abraham.

Why did God even bother with dust anyway? How cool would it be if the Bible gave a scientific explanation so today we could be impressed. Should the intelligent divine make you go "Whoah, cool".  The Bible once again reveals how primitive it is. Instead  religion is such a drag on scientific progress.

God Creates Universe

Well to be fair thousands of years ago humans had no idea the earth was not the center of the universe. It was not until the 1920's that humans learned what a galaxy is. We are simply an extremely remote rebel outpost. Again, the Bible is clearly not a science book.

The Bible shows God is intimately involved in this world even down to rolling dice. The more we study nature the more that is found to be untrue. The lightening rod is exhibit A. Ancients thought God direct caused and controlled lightening. But when old Ben Franklin invented the rod we found we can control/channel this force, which if there was a personality behind it and a powerful one at that we could never do such a thing.

Adam Clarke ( 1762-1832) was an Irish theologian who wrote a full commentary on the Bible. I clip here what he said on Job 37.

Verse 10

By the breath of God frost is given -

The freezing of water, though it is generally allowed to be the effect of cold, and has been carefully examined by the most eminent philosophers, is still involved in much mystery; and is a very proper subject to be produced among the great things which God doeth, and which we cannot comprehend, Job 37:5. Water, when frozen, becomes solid, and increases considerably in bulk. The expansive power in freezing is so great, that, if water be confined in a gun-barrel, it will split the solid metal throughout its whole length. Bombshells have been filled with water, and plugged tight, and exposed to cold air, when they have been rent, though the shell has been nearly two inches thick! Attempts have been made to account for this; but they have not, as yet, been generally successful. The breath of God freezes the waters; and that breath thaws them. It is the work of Omnipotence, and there, for the present, we must leave it.

Now we can also control God breath using refrigerators.

Tower Of Babel - Scientific Ilteracy Or Was God Truly Afraid Of Men?

Can't we just agree the Bible gets a failing grade in science? This really would be a story of self correcting errors if God had just let it go. Why didn't God stop men from landing on the moon or sending the Voyager satellites past our Solar System? How is it different today than thousands of years ago? Oh yeah, science.

I have been debating a Christian about the brilliance of medical science found in the Bible. They really only have some priestly-oriented text found in the Torah (Leviticus; Deuteronomy).

One important text to him was Deu 23:10-13, which he states that the "Israelites are told to stay outside their camp if they have an infectious discharge, and to dig and bury their feces outside of camp."

He must have quoted it from some webpage because the text isn't aligned by subject and it has absolutely nothing to do with infections unless he considered semen, poop and/or urine an infection. But I let that go and look at the text itself.

Deu 23:9-11
When you are encamped against your enemies, keep away from everything impure. If one of your men is unclean because of a nocturnal emission, he is to go outside the camp and stay there. But as evening approaches he is to wash himself, and at sunset he may return to the camp.

If a guy has a wet dream he is unclean and needs to go outside the camp and stay there, wash himself and return at sunset. What medical procedure is this addressing? Are we supposed to do this today avoid human contact if we have spilled our seed?

Deu 23:12-14
Designate a place outside the camp where you can go to relieve yourself. As part of your equipment have something to dig with, and when you relieve yourself, dig a hole and cover up your excrement. For the Lord your God moves about in your camp to protect you and to deliver your enemies to you. Your camp must be holy, so that he will not see among you anything indecent and turn away from you.

Go outside the camp to go to the bathroom and bury it. Note this it is not about infections but decency. Text is clear on that. This has nothing to do with infectious disease, but body fluids that God is embarrassed by. Nudity is a big deal to Him. The body is dirty, especially what comes out of it. The text says he just didn't want to see it. What culture that didn't believe in putting human waste elsewhere?

The great cultures back as far as 7000 years ago practiced this and more. They also understood things such as avoiding contaminated water. The Babylonians, Egyptians, Greeks and Romans were definitely more advanced medically than the Hebrews.

The Hebrews believed in a God who caused/allowed diseases and what was important was to placate him in order to live the good life. Healing was magical and supernatural. That is the clear message of the bible. It is not a science book which Fundamentalist for some reason need to believe. This only distracts the intent of Bible. Most Christians have moved on and don't look at the Bible as a science book.

With this guy I brought up on the text he apparently meant. Wonder why atheist know the bible better. Hmmm....
Anyway it is Leviticus 14.

This chapter isn't about curing anyone. It is about quarantining people and hoping on their own they get better. This is not a huge leap in medical science. It would become obvious to any group of humans that some people get sick being around other sick people. If the bible had an actual cure for a sick person that would be something to boast about. But the "medical" procedure was to isolate and wait and see. How exactly does that prove Jehovah shared some great insight with the Jews?

Then even more bizarre the bible happily rewards the now "cured" person with positive application of animal blood. That is an unhealthy practice. Can you imagine someone today who believed in the Bible thought they should sprinkle animal blood around an operating room to aid in the cure of the patient? All hell would break loose, lawsuits and everything.

Leviticus 14 goes on about how to address bad mold. If a priest, the Hebrew voodoo doctors, identifies a house with bad mold, they lock it up for a week. After a week they check it out. If the mold is gone, then kill an animal and sprinkle blood. YUCK. If the mold is not gone, the tear out the stones and throw them outside the town.

Summary of Biblical medical procedures
1) Remove yourself from camp for one day if you have a nocturnal emission and wash up.
2) Poop and Pee outside the camp, bury it
3) If a priest says you have an infectious disease remove yourself from the camp for a week or so. The priest looks at you after that and if you got better all by yourself, he kills an animal and sprinkles blood on you.
4) If a priest sees a house has bad mold, lock it up for a week. If after the week the mold gets better all by itself, kill an animal and sprinkle blood about. Or if there is still mildew tear out the stones and throw them outside of town.

Why hasn't this been written up in some medical journal?

Seriously, how does anyone try to defend the bible as some enlightened medical book?

The most obvious and yet most damning reason against Religion is that it is man made. Here is a great website that gives 18 reason why Christianity is man made. He makes the case that Christian apologist have arguments against them but they only satisfy the believer. All they need is one bent and barely stable rusty nail to hang onto to be satisfied. I recall buying such things when I was a Christian, but deep down inside, something just told me they really were flimsy defenses and happily for me they won they day. Good-bye cognitive dissonance. It is no wonder so many youtube videos made by Christians block the vote, block leaving a comment or you must wait for their approval. Doesn't that sound like fear? They cannot bear the truth. On the flip side the videos done by atheist allow the free flow of comments. This is all true for blogs as well.

The Evidence For Christianity

As Mark Twain said, "It is easier to fool people than to convince them they have been fooled."

The 18 arguments showing Christianity is man-made. I had added some of my thoughts here.
1. The flawed Bible
2. Jesus and Paul expected the apocalypse very soon even in that generations lifetime.
3. Converting a local god into a universal god, who heretofore left millions unaware.
4. No evidence to the historicity of Jesus beyond the New Testament.
5. Christian refusal to learn from new evidence and recite old arguments.
6. Prophecies of Jesus retrofitted into the Old Testament and poorly at that. The book of Matthew is quite flawed for me in particular.
7. The flimsy argument the NT was written by eye-witnesses. My favorite is the 500 who were resurrected when Jesus died and they are unnamed but apparently told everyone and yet not even one of them is named or has a book written by them.
8. The flawed argument that people will only give their lives for that which is true. No. They only need to be convinced its true. That doesn't make it true. The 9/11 terrorists flying into the World Trade Center is sufficient to dismiss that.
9. The mumbo jumbo about crowbarring Jesus into divinity where now the one god is three. That wasn't introduced until the late 4th century.
10. Christian apologist practice bait and switch tactics. They argue for the existence of god that could be used by any religion and then supposedly having you convinced they assume that proves their god, which is does not. It could just as easily apply to Thor, Odin, Vishnu or Enki.
11. In order to believe Christianity literally they are forced to believe the world is only 6000 years old and the arguments they use to ignore evidence is astonishing.
12. The obvious human endeavor to determine which books belonged in the Bible. They had to choose out of hundreds of books which one was god inspired. They was a long period of dispute and then once settled the command went out to destroy those books not in the canon. There is nothing awe inspiring about that process. This was done under the Roman Catholic reign, which many Protestants would not be happy about. Interestingly enough the gospels were unnamed for years until someone decided to give them a church leader's name (e.g. apostle) to provide clout. This was typical in ancient times. Additionally in comparing manuscripts of the New Testament there were thousands of errors, omissions and even additions so much so the author of Revelation gave a stern warning against the practice. A perfect god could have been more hands on.
13. The account of the death and resurrection of Jesus, the only thing that matters in Christianity, is contradictory when you read the 4 gospels side by side.
14. It is obvious from the style of writing that the gospel of John & Revelation were not the same authors. Revelations almost didn't make it into the NT (which frankly would have been great to cut down on all the nuts attracted to it), but they made the argument to accept it into the NT because they said it was written by the same author as the gospel of John which actually is not the case.
15. The author of the book of Revelation makes no claim about his cryptic prophecies being way off in the future but meant it to be applicable to his times. Meanwhile, generation after generation of Christians say it is for their time.
16. Christian history and particularly when Christianity is in power they torture and murder those who don't believe as they do. Sounds like a local god, doesn't it? Here in the U.S. they show the same proclivity to oppress others that don't believe as they do (e.g the laws against gays and abortion). A taste of things to come if they continue. Their local god gets pissed at those who don't agree with him, but somehow he is unable to take care of it himself. All-powerful or imaginary?
17. You shall know them by their fruits Jesus said. Yet morally speaking there is no difference between an atheist and a Christian or any other group of people who believe differently. How is it the one nation under god was one of the last to abolish slavery. And then there was and is the continual race hatred. Also, why did the loving Christians wipe out about every Native American populations? Is this the country they want to get us back to? For the answer ask a gay person.
18. Why are there so few details on heaven besides eternity bowing before god. Why is hell easier to understand?

But what I am struck with is how limit the world view is. The fortunate thing for Israel was that it was the crossroads of great empires, but even so they remained small minded and local.
