Taming The Wild Fundie

Part of my support for atheism and evolution, two not necessarily related topics, is to look for new youtube video on those topics. I enjoy learning. Also I look for ignorance and comment on it. I used to be a fundie minister and believed it at least for awhile whole heartedly. It intrigues me that I don't anymore and I reflect on the transition and what convinced me. I can relive some of that by debating fundies. What are the most powerful arguments? Well, recently I had a debate in one thread with three fundies and I might have awaken one, offended one and stunned one.

I first replied to cmpresents. His comment was

Imagine this, you are a child you start going to school and the evolutionist just expect you to believe everything they say, this is sad, truly sad. Well, I thought how stupid. Christians are always trying to apply their methodology to others, for example they say atheism is a religion, that deep down an atheist knows there is a god and as above they persecute people who don't believe like they do. They are quite self-centered and can't see they world in any other way. Perhaps that is the "belief gene". Belief in no god at least opens the door to there may be more than one way to look at something. If you have god on your side then there is only one way. My reply:

Pot calling the kettle black. You are talking about Christian history which was in power for 1500 years. A scientist will not burn you at the stake or torture you to believe what they say. I see significantly more benefits from science than ever was produced by Christianity. In fact science rewards you in this life. You only get "the" reward by Christianity after you die. LOL

Christians, did not burn anyone at the stake, catholics did, religious fanatics. Show me anywhere in the gospels where Jesus taught his disciples to go burn anyone or kill anyone. Your argument is flawed, so don't repeat it, or use it anymore, burn it. Science is fine as long as long as it doesn't teach ppl that there is no God and that we evolved from monkey's. Science subliminally teaches that there is no God, so don't be a hypocrite.

Jesus is not God, but the son/spirit/will of God. Jesus never taught of hell, that is your interpretation or the one you baught from religion. Yes it does, science teaches that we evolved from monkeys, don't be so anal, monkeys, apes, ape like men, the same shit, no matter how you phrase it, science teaches that we evolved from some none-human primate or what ever the hell you want to call it, so stop being a child, yoiu are anyoing me.

Patience is a good virtue in debate. Points are generally won that way.

How interesting that this guy didn't know his bible. This is the first mistake I made when I was a Christian, I read the bible and I read it a lot. The more you read it the more issues you see. The pastor will tell you that it is the sin inside you and you must resist. Step 1 is to hand over your brain which is the best gift humans have been given. cmpresents never replied after that. Perhaps he is true to his word and gave up Christianity.

About a week later a guy named SelfPromoting reads my thread and has to comment on it.

"Jesus taught of everlasting hell and mind control. He was far worse the the OT god." And what if controlling your mind to not think sinful thoughts actually made you feel better, and set you free to a large degree? Would he be such a bad guy then, or more like a doctor? If you have an ulcer and the doctor says, 'quit drinking beer', is he a bad guy controlling your mind? Or is he just giving you great advice?

If the creator of a world tells you in what way you can live free and happy in His creation, and in what way you will end up destroying his creation. (Which includes you) and you do the opposite of what he says, is that true freedom? He was kind enough to give you the freedom (because love is freedom) but it doesn't mean it was wise to go against his advice. Is it mind control then to follow God's own instructions, the creator OF the mind, for giving you a healthy one? A healthy mind?

Then one more guy, clawedification, jumps in and is pissed at me but unintentionally replies to SelfPromoting. He calls him an idiot. SelfPromoting tries to straighten clawedification out saying look dude you are arguing with the wrong guy and maybe you should give up calling people idiots. But clawedificaion is rabid for a while until a wee bit of light comes in.

Sorry if that is true im typing a million miles an hour as it is my responsibility to be as truthful as i can so should all the sciences.The fact remains either way evolution is based on assumptions and nothing more,all the evidence can really do is point to similarity's in all living things.

See, if Jesus is right, and you are wrong, you are the one hurting people, not Jesus, who tells people rightfully, how to use their minds, which he created, to the maximum benefit. The language of the time? I enjoy watching early TV shows and movies. That was partly in my lifetime and some references there I don't get, but this guy gets what Jesus meant 2000 years ago. Thinking he is done with me I reply:

If you have gone to the doctor you have benefited from the theory of evolution. Antibiotics which has saved the lives of millions is based on how bacteria evolve. The hundreds of breeds of dogs, plants are an example of evolution. Speciation. You see it all around you & benefited from it. It is gradual change over time. Nothing more. Natural selection is adaptation to environmental changes. Most Christians accept it now. Read Jerry Coyne's book Why Evolution is True.

He chooses a Christian doctor so he can feel safe in his little fundie world. We really don't teach enough science. I have had to read Coyne's book over and over to get it. To argue with a fundie you have to really make it like 1st grade. I had to think back to what is elementary and what was convincing or at least gave me pause. So I throw a number of things at him seeing what might stick.

a christian doctor may not know about evolution, but his medicine is based on it. If species didn't evolve then we could kill permanently all adverse bacteria. If you go to the grocery store and buy fresh veggies & fruit you are seeing evolution. Did you know that brussels sprouts, broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower all come from the same hardly noticeable wild cabbage. Man using evolution developed all that.

Christianity has a long history of denying reality. They thought the world didn't move & the sun went around the earth. They persecuted those who said otherwise. Now they accept it matter of fact. They rejected the fossil record saying it was Satan who had put fossils in the ground or God did to test their faith. Then they changed again, but not really coming up with a consensus. They rejected evolution entirely, then accepted micro-ev, adaptation. All in due time....

Bio-geography is a big part of evolution fundie-Christians ignore. Just one of 1ks of examples:Believing in Noah & all animals came from Mt Ararat, How do they explain kangaroos are only found in Australia, no where else. No fossils anywhere but there. They cannot say god did more than one creation because of the bible. Oceanic Islands are homes to plants and animals found no where else. Lemurs only 1 place. This & 1ks of other facts are why most Christians accept evolution.

I figure one more statement is needed. I think it is important to know someone needs time to think about something and not pile on to distract that.

Beside kangaroos there are over 230 other marsupials that live in that area of the world & no where else. You got your work cut out. another ex: the Koala Bear.

Another thing that gave me pause as a fundie Christians was how could the universe only be 6k years old when we can see exploding stars that are much older. The closest is Supernova 1987A, 163k light years away. Sin came in 6k? No where in the Bible does it say the universe is 6k years old. The church just made it up.

Accepting scientific facts that Christianity originally stood against puts you in a very bright/brave crowd. Ex: Copernicus,Galileo,Newton,Linn aeus,Kepler,Buckland,Lyell,etc . To them God was not deceptive & preferred honesty studying his 2nd book, nature. Christians were the first to map out the fossil layers. They recognized the Church was not always on the side of truth. The deception today is done by fundies. The things they come up with to hold on to a bronze age view. WOW

The last paragraph was in response to his being impressed by authorities and thinking scientists were the deceptive ones. Christianity is a closed system. You couldn't speak truth if you are on the outside. No ghost is living inside you, the holy ghost that is.

And with that he has not replied back. I will never really know what happened after this interaction, but I feel good about engaging them, keeping it elementary. It took decades for me to drop the shackles of religion. It is a very strong web and quite hard to break. Tiny cracks in the facade is what happened to me and I think that is the best contribution I can make to other fundies. I feverously repaired them, but that was so much work. It is hard being a thinking Christian. It is like that joke where a guy happens upon someone banging there head against a wall. He asks him "Why are you doing that?". He replies "It feels so good when I stop".

The Catholics spent $1.8 millions dollars and 5 years to find out the cause of their priests widespread cases of pedophilia since the 40's. Was it because they demand celibacy from their priests? Like I said in my prior post, bullshit would follow more bullshit and just like the Jesus story everything is true even the lies.

See, the rapture did happen, it just didn't happen in a "visible" way. He was totally right the whole time! The world is still in the process of ending. "We have not made a mistake insofar as the timeline," Camping said. It's just that judgement day was "spiritual," not "physical." And, in light of this, the promotional campaign is over:

We're not going to pass out any more tracts. We're not going to put up any more billboards — in fact they're coming down right now... The world has been warned. The world is under judgment... Harold Camping - I Got To Think It Out

Ah, the bravado knowing the mind of God. Camping needs a day to figure out some bullshit to cover the bullshit he has been espousing for months. Why does he have to "think it out"? If the bible says it, it has to be true. That is what he was saying before.

But it is pretty predictable what he will come out with. He is not the first nor the last. Well, hell, he did this before in 1994, so it isn't his first or last. He will point out "You know even the disciples of Jesus got it wrong about Jesus first mission until suddenly there was an new revelation". In other words he will just made up something new. The bible is so contradictory it is an easy task and with a few hundred gullible believers it is a piece of cake.

During the time of Jesus the Jews thought that a Moses type would arise and throw off the Roman rule and establish the Jews as the new world order. This Jesus (or collection of Jesus') seemed to be the man for the job. But then he got crucified. So they needed a day or two to think it out. That's when the disciples came up with the lamb of god shit, the blood of Jesus was required to cover the time they lied to their mom about being out late and getting drunk. But wait, what they said before was also true. Jesus was going to come back and throw off Roman rule and establish a new world order so they were not lying then either. They just got the timing wrong. The lying skills they developed growing up they have mastered as adults. Religion is the greatest bullshit story ever told. It keeps changing but it is always the same.

Christians See The Future

Christians view of the future is always negative. They never see anything positive in the future. They would never have predicted say one hundred years ago that science and technology would be so beneficial to mankind. Everything is bad except things that will never exist or those things you can only find out about until after you are dead. They get this attitude from the Bible. I hope to some day take two markers to it. Paint the positive statements in one color say blue and the negative in another color say yellow. I am quite confident after reading this book dozens of times that I will only need one blue marker and a box or two of yellow markers.

So this book has taught Christians how to prophecy. Isn't it is amazing how accurate they are in their predictions like this video? I have one Christian prophecy that they will make lots of money off the backs of gullible and naive people.

The FAQ is worth a read. The workers have put in writing that they do not believe god and for added insurance have blasphemed the holy ghost. This will calm the fears of the saved in heaven who would say "Hey, weren't you the guy who was supposed to take care of Fluffy?".

This is great it is bringing together atheist who will adopt these pets with the righteous who want their pet to find a good home in their eternal absence. You know maybe there is hope for the world getting along. What is next peace in the middle east?

When I was a Christian I used to read this kind of bullshit and feel ashamed. Jesus had to suffer so much so I could be with god. How he loved even me such a pitiful sinner. Each time I felt I had sinned I would think of Jesus on the cross and how I had wounded him afresh.

Boy, was I crazy. Such an insane God, that he had to slaughter his own children so strangers could be with him. And he didn't put a bullet to the back of his head like a mob hit, clean and out. He made Jesus die in agony. Blood somehow makes me right with god.

Of a murdered loved one, many times you hear the parents or partner saying they don't feel compelled to kill the murderer because it won't bring back their dead loved one. Even some humans have a better sense of morality than this primitive desert religion's god.

I feel nauseated when I read signs like this now. It is dumbfounding how Christianity ever got a foot hold.

Evolution happens even within a human lifetime

Nylon is a synthetic material and was invented in 1935. Bacteria cannot grow/feed on synthetics. However, in 1975 Japanese scientists discovered a new bacteria feeding off nylon waste in a pond near a nylon producing factory. The bacteria strain of Flavobacterium, using an enzyme called nylonase, had evolved junk, repetitive DNA to digest certain byproducts of nylon 6 manufacture, such as the linear dimer of 6-aminohexanoate, even though those substances are not known to have existed prior to the invention of nylon. Further study revealed that the three enzymes the bacteria were using to digest the byproducts were significantly different from any other enzymes produced by other Flavobacterium strains (or any other bacteria for that matter), and not effective on any material other than the manmade nylon byproducts.

Scientists have also been able to induce another species of bacteria, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, to evolve the capability to break down the same nylon byproducts in a laboratory by forcing them to live in an environment with no other source of nutrients. The P. aeruginosa strain did not seem to use the same enzymes that had been utilized by the original Flavobacterium strain.

Nylon eating bacteria is an example of evolution working even with a human lifetime.

Save The Children by Teaching Them Evolution

The non-profit organization Save The Children has reported its 2011 Mothers' Index comparing the well-being of mothers and children in 164 countries with Norway at the top and Afghanistan at the bottom. The United States is 31st.

The report relies on information published by governments, research institutions and international agencies.

For the countries at the bottom life is grim, lack of clean water, limited education, few skilled health professionals, limited modern birth control methods. A typical Norwegian woman will have 18 years of education, live to be 83 and have a 1 in 175 chance of losing a child before its 5th birthday. The typical Afghanistan woman will have less than 5 years of education, will die before she is 45 and have a 1 in 5 chance of losing her child before its 5th birthday meaning nearly every mother will experience this.

Why didn't the United States rank higher

- Maternal mortality is 1 in 2,100 - the highest in any industrialized nation.

- Under 5 mortality is 8 in 1,000 births. 40 countries performed better.

- 58% of children in the US are enrolled in preschool, the 5th lowest country in the developed world.

- the least generous maternity leave policy in terms of duration and maternity leave policy of any wealthy nation.

- the US is also lagging behind with regard to the political status of women. Only 17% of congress are held by women, while Sweden is 45% and Iceland 43%

Isn't it interesting how the belief in evolution and the well-being of mother's and children correlate? The U.S. is still ahead of the fundamentalist Turkey. They rank 55.

To understand evolution a child will have to be introduced to many of the sciences and have a civilized society with clean water and health care. It introduces the cause and development of diseases and also provide the path to cures. It opens up the world instead of keeping it closed in primitive views of the world. Praying isn't enough. It doesn't make up for ignorance.

Religious Child Abuse?

While you were born with no feelings for this one or even able to see him, you must now accept and know and feel him as the one who can save you. While out in nature you may see no evidence that is only because Satan is trying to trick you and/or God is trying to test you. Because you cannot see god in nature, we will tear down nature and will build monstrous churches with high spirals that say LOOK AT ME, LOOK AT ME. There are many Christians who are embarrassed by the Old Testament and rightly so. It is a vile piece of collection of books. Such a vile angry God and then it contains the driest material every known in literature. All the this "so and so begat so and so" surrounded by truly lame stories.

Marcion was one of the first Christians to attempt to canonize the books of the Christian Bible. He didn't include any books in what we now know as the Old Testament. He was embarrassed by them. They are quite barbaric. But the problem is the authors of the the books now in the New Testament quoted the Old Testament to prove Jesus. So, ultimately they were stuck with keeping it and could not find a good way to demote it to a lesser god.

Christians don't want to think this God of the OT was this same Jesus, but for those who promoted him to God they have to accept that. The Jehovah Witnesses got around it by denying Jesus' divinity. All Christians pick and choose over the rubble of the New Testament for just the "happy" messages. But was Jesus that good? The god of the OT was always going about picking stubborn people who wouldn't listen to him so He could punish the heck out of them. You think this god would be smart but he just hasn't got the brain power to realize what he is doing. Why would an all-powerful & all-knowing god create a stubborn and defective product to only get mad at the product? He should be mad at himself for doing such a crappy job. Anyway, Christians avoid this, don't read the OT and say spend your time reading the NT. It is much better. OT God - bad. NT God - good.

Jesus truly is the Son Of God of the Old Testament. The OT god said keep it in your pants, but the NT God said even if you think it you are JUST AS GUILTY. So controlling your behavior is worthless? The Old Testament god punished you in this world. You screw up, you would be harassed, have to endure exile and disease and then die. Not good enough for the NT god. He will torture you infinitely in a new place called hell. Jesus blew it out of the park. He had to go international and set up a special place with the utmost horrors, a protracted war against evil people. I am thinking the Daddy was better than the Son, kind of like a father/son president set we had in our unfortunate recent history.

Here is the NT god's embellishment of a place called hell unlike the OT god's sheol where you just died:

The Tennessee House of Representatives in a 70-28 vote (bill HR 0368 text) on April 7, 2011 encourages teachers to promote woo-woo without fear of reprisal. You know they won't teach astrology which this could cover but creationism (un-intelligent design - wink, wink), a baseless myth. This applies to kindergarden to seniors in high school students. Make them dumb while their young. The bill specifically called out biological evolution, the chemical origins of life, global warming and human cloning, but it also lies by saying it shall not be construed to promote or discriminate against any religious or non-religious doctrine. If I were a teacher I would start teach new age witchcraft. That would be a laugh.

There is no scientific controversy on evolution or global warming. Just religious nuts who are blinded by their fairy tales.

Louisiana in 2008 passed a similar law so that teachers could teach students religious anti-evolution bullshit.

The Tennessee Senate has before it an identical bill, SB 0893 which is most likely to be passed at the end of this month and Governor Bill Haslam will sign it into law.

I went to the DC National Zoo this past week with my granddaughter. It was exciting for me since I hadn't been there in a decade or so. I used to take my kids there all the time when they were young. My excitement was to see the great apes. In the past I went as a Christian and saw these as lower forms of life, only to be dominated. Now I was going there without being befuddled by believing that in all the universe this speck of dust called Earth was God's primary focus and humans were is only concern and all His attention was on me and my body fluids. Now I went to see the similarities of all apes, of which I am but one branch from our common ancestor. I had the fortune of going when there was a nursing Gorilla. I watched the similarities as she cared for her young one, just like we humans do. I sat there watching her as she sat there with her young one right next to her watching us. It was both beautiful and sad. I wished we humans would be open to all life and not just the one within the WALLS of our home and malls with all more and more stuff to accumulate to fill an empty hole. What is more grand than nature itself. I live in the country and just love to sit outside on a nice sunny day and watch the show. There was another gorilla who had his back to the glass and I could see his body and bone structure and marvel at how similar it was to my own. Head, ears, arms, elbows, legs, knees, spinal chord, hands, flat fingernails, thumbs; and also curiosity, excitement, playfulness, sadness, boredom. I wondered how humans were so self-centered that they thought we were so different. How did they conceived that we were so much better. How brilliant Darwin was to not look at the differences but saw the similarities tying them together in such a wonderful way. Seeing things as they are. Living in life, not separate from it.

Sergei Vasilievich Rachmaninov (1 April 1873 [O.S. 20 March] – 28 March 1943 was a Russian composer, pianist, and conductor. He was considered one of the finest pianists of his day and, as a composer, very nearly the last great representative of Russian late Romanticism in classical music.

In his early years, he showed great skill in composition. While still a student, he wrote the one-act opera, Aleko, for which he was awarded a gold medal in composition, his First Piano Concerto, and a set of piano pieces, Morceaux de fantaisie (Op. 3, 1892), which includes this famous Prelude in C sharp minor. The composer later became annoyed by the public's fascination with this piece, composed when he was 19 years old. He would often tease an expectant audience in the days when it was traditional for the audience to request particular compositions, by asking, "Oh, must I?" or claiming inability to remember anything else.
