A common ancestor of Lucy has been found and has been nicknamed Kadanuumuu ("big man"). Kadanuumuu is 400,000 years older than Lucy. Lucy was our common ancestor which showed walking upright was the first evolutionary step for modern humans. Having longer legs and shorter arms meant we were separating ourselves from knuckle-walkers like other great apes. This reinforces that. The big brain came later. It is believed the earth's rise in temperature and drought drove these common ancestors from the shrinking rainforest trees and walking long distances to find food. Those who had longer legs could travel further and sustain themselves to pass on their genes. This ability has lead to mankind blanketing the earth.

Darwin found that the similarities of embryos were powerful evidence for evolution. Centuries before people thought that the human embryo would look like a tiny baby. But it was discovered with the microscope they didn't look like that at all. Instead they found lots of similarities and progression with other living organisms. Every embryo had traits that looked like fish to start out with. Then for those that weren't fish they went through stages like amphibians. Then for those who weren't amphibians they shared traits like reptiles. And finally those that were not reptiles developed into mammals. It NEVER worked the other way. No fish had mammal traits. No amphibian had reptile traits. No reptile had mammal only traits. It is fascinating that the human embryo has a tail and slits that are related to gills on a fish embryo.

We now know that genes are what controls the whole process and all living things have the base elements. The process to create a fly is the same as the human. It reminds me of a computer with ones and zeros. It produces incredible variety. Genes are far more powerful and are the engine to nearly infinite variety and that is all we see around us. I will like to live 150 more years and see where science takes us unless religion kills us first.

His music and voice had a very distinctive sound. Even though married he began seeing Gloria Jones. His marriage broke up and he had a son with Gloria in 1975. Two weeks before Marc's 30th birthday, he was her passenger as they headed home from Morton's drinking club and resturant. Jones lost control and struck a sycamore tree. Jones lived but Marc did not. A shrine has been set up at the tree.

New poll out today from the The Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life indicating atheist know more about religion than Protestants and Catholics. This does not surprise me. It is not that atheist are more intelligent, they have just read the material with an open mind. Many are like me. We were religious and threw our heart and soul into it and the more we did that the more we saw how hollow it was. As Isaac Asimov said "Properly read, the Bible is the most potent force for atheism ever conceived".

Also 1/3 of Americans say they read from the Bible once a week and are terrified to read other religious books keeping them inbreed. You know Satan is out to get you in those other books.

From the study:

Atheists and agnostics, Jews and Mormons are among the highest-scoring groups on a new survey of religious knowledge, outperforming evangelical Protestants, mainline Protestants and Catholics on questions about the core teachings, history and leading figures of major world religions.

On average, Americans correctly answer 16 of the 32 religious knowledge questions on the survey by the Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion & Public Life. Atheists and agnostics average 20.9 correct answers. Jews and Mormons do about as well, averaging 20.5 and 20.3 correct answers, respectively. Protestants as a whole average 16 correct answers; Catholics as a whole, 14.7. Atheists and agnostics, Jews and Mormons perform better than other groups on the survey even after controlling for differing levels of education.

Many Americans are devoted readers of Scripture: More than a third (37%) say they read the Bible or other Holy Scriptures at least once a week, not counting worship services. But Americans as a whole are much less inclined to read other books about religion. Nearly half of Americans who are affiliated with a religion (48%) say they “seldom” or “never” read books (other than Scripture) or visit websites about their own religion, and 70% say they seldom or never read books or visit websites about other religions.

Churches Reeling From Decline in Donations

As my blog's name says Jesus always needs money. He can create worlds, heal the sick, raise the dead, but never has enough money. This hard hit recession is even making it even tougher for the Lord and Master of the Universe. Friday's article in the New York Times describes the woes of Jesus trying to pay his electric bill or paying his gospel singers. Trying to keep up all that adoration He craves it no easy task.

A couple of interesting statements in the article are "Some members, newly jobless and ashamed, turned in tithing envelopes that were empty" and "On one hand, more than 50 families out of a total of 580 in his congregation this year asked for their annual dues to be reduced". You know some churches require you to make a financial contract with the Church. Nice way to guilt the members, so much so that some are too embarrassed to even show up. One church board member told his pastor to stop asking for donations and pray for the economy to turn around. What's wrong with these politicians? All we need to do is pray - problem solved. Well, it is only a theory or actually an unproven hypothesis. This god is unpredictable.

"While the recession has sharpened the drop in giving, it is not entirely responsible for it. Rather, it has accentuated and accelerated a trend away from giving to religious organizations that scholars have been tracking for the past decade. The impending wave of retirements by baby boomers, who start hitting age 65 next year, threatens another blow to congregational income." I know where 20+ million went to a pseudo-science Creation Museum in Kentucky that says man rode on dinosaurs denying all evidence except the TV show the Flintstones.

How is it the churches suffer with this? Does the story of Joseph in the Bible show that righteous people are bless with great wealth? The prosperity gospel.

Well, it is more gentile than most, but is it true it is free? As the saying goes there is no free lunch. What do I get if I go inside? I get a lecture about how evil I have been (bye-bye to any self-worth and self esteem). I was condemned by God and/or Jesus and/or the Holy Spirit to eternal damnation because this Creator made a flawed universe. And the good news is that he knows everything. He knew he was setting Adam & Eve up to fail. He knew he would make them just stupid enough to believe the words of a talking snake who had taken that form but really was Lucifer, Satan, a fallen angel, who apparently had lived with God for countless ages. This Lucifer was very smart. God had created him that way. Oddly, Genesis leads you to believe that the heavens and the earth were created only in one week. But somehow Lucifer existed well before all that. But consistency is not the Bible strong suit. So you are told how awful you are and how God set you up. However, there is good news. He made himself a sacrifice so he could appease himself so he would not put you in an eternal lake of fire. He has quite the ego. He is all about putting out rules for you which he continually breaks himself, but that is OK. You are so batter and bruise after all these free details you lay down in front of him your life, your will, your money, your non-believing friends, your spouse, your children, your free thought, your doubt, well everything that you are, your soul. So when did it become free? What did you gain again? An imaginary trip to an imaginary place that you will only see after you die. I think I will just go to a movie theater and pay the $12 bucks to enjoy an an imaginary place I can see.

I totally love his 11th Symphony.

When I ride my motorcycle around on Sundays I am in the BuyBull Belt and many of the small churches have a sign out that they change periodically to challenge believers and non-believers alike and they try to be clever. I have given thought about posting on them because the greater majority get a reaction out of me, which is their intended affect. This Sunday's Church Sign.

Selective Obedience is Convenience

How interesting. You know one church's obedience to its' faith is disobedience to another's. In fact my first church had definitive ideas on the state of the dead before the resurrection. Once I bailed on that church and was entirely guilt ridden (they had done an excellent job) I joined another church or was sucked into it to try to keep my marriage together. Once they found I believed the dead are dead and not frying in hell I was called up on the carpet. I really tried once again to be obedient even embarassingly with tears but I just couldn't hold that together. I had this thing about not lying, which I still do. My morals have only improved now that I am an atheist. Anyway eventually they ex-communicated me because I was not obedient. They could not "stand with me as a brother". That reference is in Paul's letters regarding incest. I don't see how they could apply it to me but they did. Judgement is harsh and strong with fundamental Christians because they picked it all up from their imaginary Daddy. Anyway fast forward a decade or so and I look back gratefully on that event. If I had of somehow been able to destroy every part of my self-worth and been a robot I would be miserably happy. A smile on the outside and wanting to kill myself on the inside. Today my outside and inside match and that is such a wonderful way to live.

So, this is what went through my mind as I reacted to the church sign. Now if I could put a sign right next to it expressing my atheist point of view it would be this:

He hears voices in his head from the Almighty. The voice said burn the Koran and now the voice says not now, not ever will he burn the Koran. But if the voice says do it he will do it and you know that. Don't we lock up people who hear voices in their head anymore? This is one dumbass pastor and doesn't bat an eye comparing himself to Abraham. Why? Because the voice in Abraham's head said to kill his son and then reversed it at the last moment. The pastor is right this is VERY CRAZY shit. Humans are so dumb. They imagine the wildest things and feel they are the center of the universe and know without a doubt god is speaking to them, justifying one action and then reversing it and justifying it in the same way. No rhyme or reason. This is religion. This will be how man destroys himself. The twin towers were destroyed killing thousands of lives and leaving many families broken hearted because someone heard the voice of god. The pastor says that voice is of the devil, but hey maybe a door is open to talk about not building a ground zero mosque. Bat shit crazy this one.

Pascal born June 19, 1623 and died August 19, 1662 (age 39), was a French philosopher. He might have made some contributions but his legacy is his wager or gambit. If there is a God and you worship him you have all to gain, but if you don't you lose everything and burn in hell. If there is no God and you worship him you lose nothing. It is as it states a bet, a hustler's bet. Christians like to use it. They have said it to me. But if God wants a faker worshipping him over an honest person then he is not a God I would want to live with. It seems quite immoral. But this cartoon highlights that worshipping a God that doesn't exist does not come without costs.

Don't Let The Bed Bugs Bite

A growing concern we read about today is the rise of bed bug incidents and everyone is freaking out. I was mulling over these bugs and how they must have evolved. They only come out at night and feed on human blood. Their interaction with humans evolved in such a way that they are the great at staying alive and continuing to breed. Humans are quite clever. Any bugs that would have come out in the day light would be immediately killed, so those who tendency would be to hid during that time would successfully breed. Also, the size of them would remain small because humans could see the bigger ones and kill them. How intellectually satisfying evolution and natural selection is! It just makes sense. This principal of natural selection can be applied to all living things. Humans even became more clever and developed pesticides, such as DDT and which could find these little buggers 24 by 7. However, some evolved resistance to this pesticide. Humans found out that DDT had some serious bad affects so they stopped using it. Now the bed bugs are coming back because the old methods and finding them and physically killing them keeps the survivors small and only coming out at night. I would expect some pesticide company is trying to come up with a new version of DDT because it will be lucrative, but it will need to attack these bugs who have evolved resistance to DDT in a new way.  This is the whole basis for antibiotics. Humans have to continue to develop new stains because bacteria continues to adapt and evolve with what is in their environment. How predictable evolution is and how brilliant Darwin was. He truly was a great man and gave us a wonderful tool that truly helped mankind.

Then on the other side you have the evolution-haters, the fundies of the monotheistic religions. What has been their plan on saving humans from disease and pests? Pray, brother, pray. When science was not around or at best voodoo that is all humans could do. Now is the time to realize that this is of no value for helping mankind. Christians mock fundie Muslims who put their women in burkas and yet they stop science cold. Science has proven its value. Fundamental monotheistic religions have had their time and come up very short. When will they open their eyes?

Pastor Terry Jones arrested for child pornography

Infamous Pastor Terry Jones, known for his activism against the Gainesville Florida mayor, and for his "Burn a Koran Day" has been arrested for possession of child pornography. Wednesday August 4, 2010 Pastor Terry Jones was arrested for sharing pictures of children in various states of nudity over the popular file sharing network Limewire.

City officials in Gainesville, Fla., have denied a burning permit to a local church that wants to burn copies of the Quran on the upcoming anniversary of 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Gainesville officials say book burnings like the one planned by the Dove World Outreach Center are prohibited under the city's burning ordinance.Interim Fire Chief Gene Prince further warned Wednesday that the church would face a fine if it went ahead with the burnings.

The Dove World Outreach Center had announced the planned Quran burning last month on Facebook and urged other religious groups to join "in remembrance of the fallen victims of 9/11 and to stand against the evil of Islam."

“We only did it because we felt there needed to be an outcry against Islam, because Islam is presenting itself as a religion of peace,” explained Senior Dove World Pastor Terry Jones.

Despite the warning from officials, Jones, who has written a book called "Islam is of the Devil," sent out an e-mail saying the church would still burn Qurans.

The Quran burning has been condemned by a number of Muslim and Christian groups.

KABUL, Afghanistan — Taliban militants in northern Afghanistan stoned a young couple to death for adultery, which a rights group said was the first confirmed use of the punishment here since the hardline Islamist regime was ousted in 2001.

The Taliban-ordered killing comes at a time when international rights groups have raised worries that attempts to negotiate with the Taliban to bring peace to Afghanistan could mean a step backward for human rights in the country. When the Islamist extremists ruled Afghanistan, women were not allowed to leave their houses without a male guardian, and public killings for violations of their harsh interpretation of the Quran were common.

This weekend's stoning appeared to arise from an affair between a married man and a single woman in Kunduz province's Dasht-e-Archi district.

The woman, Sadiqa, was 20 years old and engaged to another man, said the Kunduz provincial police chief, Gen. Abdul Raza Yaqoubi. Her lover, 28-year-old Qayum, left his wife to run away with her, and the two had holed up in a friend's house five days ago, said district government head, Mohammad Ayub Aqyar.

They were discovered by Taliban operatives on Sunday and stoned to death in front a crowd of about 150 men, Aqyar said.

First the woman was brought out and stoned, then the man a half an hour later, Aqyar said. He decried the punishment, which he said was ordered by two local Taliban commanders.

A spokesman for the provincial government also condemned the act.

"It is against all human rights and international conventions," said spokesman Mabubullah Sayedi. "There was no court. It was cruel."

Amnesty International said it was the first confirmed stoning in Afghanistan since the fall of Taliban rule in the 2001 U.S.-led invasion.

Do not watch this if you are faint of heart. It is simply awful. Praise Allah, the religion of peace. What you get with primitive desert religions.

God's Evil Needs

A guy on Rational Readers Squad determined the number of people God is responsible for killing in the Bible account of whacky history. He determine the known count was 2,270,365 people. His count he states does not include the flood, the destruction of Sodom & Gomorrah, the number of first born Egyptians killed. I add he also doesn't include the the countless sinners who will burn in hell forever. He killed them once only to "destroy" them again. Also, knowing how he loves to create people he plans to kill I am sure there were other "evil" people not written about in the Bible who he destroyed. The Bible surely is not the entire record of his evil needs. We also can add to his count the saints who once in charge burned and tortured "witches" and other evil doers. Also, add the glorious beginning of the "One Nation Under God" country who killed just about every living savage native Indian.

I was listening to a recording of the book of Revelation today. The author of the last book of the Bible states that God will send all the plagues to the earth punishing all the evil doers with his peanut gallery yelling "You Go God" in the corner. As part of the last days drama he chains up Satan for 1,000 years and the saints reign with Jesus telling him he has done a wonderful job. At the end of the 1,000 years Satan is unleashed after Jesus resurrects the evil people and then he tortures them through all eternity in a lake of fire, forever contained. And the saint said Amen. God could just kill them and be done with them. However, instead He needs to cause a lull in the action to savor the sweet aroma of his cruelty to only resurrect them again and torture them forever, forever contained in hell (perhaps saving them for a rainy day?). I was yelling bullshit when I was listening to this. Why would a loving God put a thousand year pause in the action just so he can punish these people all over again? And why would he keep them burning in hell forever? He loves cruelty for sure. OR-R-R-R-R-R.... The bastards that wrote the Bible who said they were all about peace and love and accepting tribulation were full of anger and hate they had to suppress for Jesus. They hope there is a god who is on their side and will punish the ones who disagreed with them in the most horrible way, more than man could ever devise.

This God of the Bible is no better than any other God in Egypt, Babylon, Greece or Rome. Why? Because that is exactly where he was made up.

Why Can't I Own Canadians?

A friend sent me this in an email. Quite good.

In her radio show, Dr Laura Schlesinger said that, as an observant Orthodox Jew, homosexuality is an abomination according to Leviticus 18:22, and cannot be condoned under any circumstance.

The following response is an open letter to Dr. Laura, written by a US man, and posted on the Internet. It's funny, as well as informative:

Dear Dr. Laura:

Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination ... End of debate.

I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some other elements of God's Laws and how to follow them.

1. Leviticus 25:44 states that I may possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?

2. I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

3. I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of Menstrual uncleanliness - Lev.15: 19-24. The problem is how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.

4. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord - Lev.1:9. The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

5. I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself, or should I ask the police to do it?

6. A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination, Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this? Are there 'degrees' of abomination?

7. Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle-room here?

8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die?

9. I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

10. My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev.19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? Lev.24:10-16. Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair, like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14) I know you have studied these things extensively and thus enjoy considerable expertise in such matters, so I'm confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging.

Paul wrote to the believers in Corinth and he told them to keep the church's dirty laundry inside the church. Why? Because even the worst of them is a better judge than the best outsider. These losers will even judge angels.  Also, he says that it would be better to wronged by someone inside the church and take it willingly than expose the misdeed to the light. Truth in name only, not reality.

I have personally experienced this attitude inside my former church and even have friends now who are being tormented by their fellow believers all in the name of Jesus. How sick it is and how sick they remain.

If any of you has a dispute with another, dare he take it before the ungodly for judgment instead of before the saints? Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if you are to judge the world, are you not competent to judge trivial cases? Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life! Therefore, if you have disputes about such matters, appoint as judges even men of little account in the church! I say this to shame you. Is it possible that there is nobody among you wise enough to judge a dispute between believers? But instead, one brother goes to law against another—and this in front of unbelievers!  The very fact that you have lawsuits among you means you have been completely defeated already. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be cheated?
